Tomb of Consignorio

Is certainly the most striking of the Della Scala tombs. It was built for Cansignorio, who died in 1375, by Bonino da Campione and Caspare Broaspini. The tomb is placed inside a railing where, within various richly decorated niches surmounted by spires are the statues of various Saints. A sumptuous canopy resting on spiral columns and embellished with niches, aedicules, pinnacles and statues, hangs over the sepulchre, which is also adorned with a wealth of decora- tion: the bas-reliefs depict Episodes linked to the life of Cansignorio.
