Tomb of Cangrande I

This is the sepulchral monument of Cangrande I Della Scala (1291-1329) and stands by the Church of Santa Maria Antica. The monument is in the Romanesque style and is the work of the Master of Sant'Anastasia. The tomb, surrounded by a stone enclosure, consists of a canopy leaning on columns and surmounted by a cusp. Above is the statue of Cangrande (copy of the original housed in the Castelvecchio Museum). The sides of the sarcophagus are sculpted in bas-relief.
