Este

This was an important centre for the Veneto people during the IX and VII° century BC. Este is the boundary between the Colli Euganei and the Piana dell'Adige. It was the dominion of the Estensi Family from the year 1000 to 1275, Este then suffered the fate of the nearby city of Padova and thus Venice. The heart of the city is Piazza Maggiore with its seventeenth century Palazzo del Municipio. Following the arcades of via Principe Umberto one can find the Romanesque church of San Martino and the Basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie, built in 1717 on a previous existing sanctuary. The duomo of Santa Tecla is also of great beauty, where there is a Pala di Giambattista Teipolo, and also the church of Santa Maria delle Consolazioni or Degli Zoccoli, with Roman mosaics on the floor. Not far away from Este, in the fraction of Carceri, it is well worthwhile the visit to the Abbazia di Santa Maria, founded by the Estensi.
